How it works

Two ways to clean copied text

1
Auto-clean copy: for Word, Excel and desktop apps
When Auto-clean copied text is enabled, Unformat cleans selected text immediately when you copy it in the browser.
The clipboard already contains clean plain text, so you can paste it anywhere with regular Ctrl+V: Word, Excel, Gmail, messengers, CRM systems, desktop apps or browser fields.
Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V
2
Manual Smart Paste: for selected browser fields
If Auto-clean copied text is disabled, Unformat does not change the clipboard when you copy.
Use Ctrl+Shift+V only inside the browser when you want to clean one specific paste into an active text field.
Ctrl+C then in browser Ctrl+Shift+V
3
Cleaning modes
Both Auto-clean copy and Smart Paste use the selected cleaning mode.
Auto
Detects the type of copied content and chooses the safest cleaning method.
Plain
Converts copied content into clean regular text and removes broken spaces, odd symbols, encoding artifacts and unwanted formatting.
Table
Preserves rows, columns, tabs and line structure for spreadsheet-like content.
Code
Preserves indentation, tabs, line breaks, brackets, backticks, hashes, underscores and syntax characters.
From AI
Removes markdown artifacts from Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and similar tools: headings, bold markers, code ticks, quotes, separators and list markers.
Simple rule: keep Auto-clean copy enabled when you paste into Word or desktop apps. Turn it off when you want copied text to stay unchanged, and use Ctrl+Shift+V only for selected browser pastes.

    FAQ

Does it work in Gmail, Notion, Slack?
Yes — Unformat works on every website in Chrome. Gmail, Notion, Slack, Google Docs, any CRM, any textarea. If you can type in it, Unformat works.
Does it read my clipboard? Is it safe?
Unformat only reads your clipboard when you press Ctrl+Shift+V — never in the background. It processes text locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server. Your data stays on your device.
What exactly does "Strip AI markdown" do?
When you copy text from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, it comes with ## headers, **bold**, `code blocks`, --- dividers, and > blockquotes. Unformat removes all of these automatically, leaving clean readable text.
How is this different from Ctrl+Shift+V?
Ctrl+Shift+V strips all HTML formatting but doesn't fix encoding errors, PDF artifacts, AI markdown, or detect tables. It also doesn't work on most websites — only in a few apps like Google Docs. Unformat works everywhere and is context-aware.
